This gene encodes a member of the cytosolic phospholipase A2 group IV family. Members of this family are involved in regulation of membrane tubule-mediated transport. The enzyme encoded by this member of the family plays a role in trafficking through the clathrin-independent endocytic pathway. The enzyme regulates the recycling process via formation of tubules that transport internalized clathrin-independent cargo proteins back to the cell surface. This gene encodes a member of the cytosolic phospholipase A2 group IV family. The enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of membrane phospholipids to release arachidonic acid which is subsequently metabolized into eicosanoids. Eicosanoids, including prostaglandins and leukotrienes, are lipid-based cellular hormones that regulate hemodynamics, inflammatory responses, and other intracellular pathways. Stathmin or STMN1 is a ubiquitous cytosolic phosphoprotein proposed to function as an intracellular relay integrating regulatory signals of the cellular environment. The encoded protein is involved in the regulation of the microtubule filament system by destabilizing microtubules. It prevents assembly and promotes disassembly of microtubules. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
